k. 22:14 For many are called, but few chosen.
polLOI GAR ei-sin kleTOI [2822]oLIgoi de e-klekTOI [1588].
NOTE: 21:42 - There is a tradition - that at the time of the building of Solomon's Temple, all component parts were pre-fab - and sent up ahead of time to the building site. The chief corner-stone for the foundation was a stone the entire width of the temple, with lips tying into each side. The workmen did not recognize it as part of the temple, and set it aside, where it became covered over with debris. When the chief builder looked for it, he couldn't find it. Upon further searching, the workmen recognized his description, searched, and recovered it from the debris.
In like manner the workmen of Jesus' day did not recognize Him as God's Chief Cornerstone, and rejected Him. But God returned Him, and following His Resurrection, placed Him as the Chief Cornerstone of His spiritual Temple, and the Head of His Body the Church. Then the Kingdom was taken from the religious leaders of Jesus' day, and following the destruction of Herod's Temple in 70 AD, given to the “One New Man,” Christ's Bride, the Church.
In 21:44, Jesus describes what would take place to the leaders of His day who rejected Him.
22:1-14 is the parable of the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. All invited will nottake part in this auspicious event. God's judgment upon such - is that they were not worthy. He ends up this parable with these sober words - “For many are called, but few chosen.
What then is the distinction between being calledand chosen? Paul talks about making one's calling and election sure! “He that endures to the endshall be saved,”is another statement of Jesus. And, “He that hears these sayings of mine and doesthem, is like a man who built his house upon a rock.”And at the close of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus warns that “not every one that says unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of the heavens; but who doesthe will of His :Father who isin the heavens.”Even to perform miracles and healings - is insufficient to qualify one. A good definition of saving faith is “hearing and doing” the will of God.
During World War II days in the Navy, I had a fellow sailor who continually greeted me with, “Many are called, but few are chosen.”He would then ask me what that meant. The preceding paragraph answers his question; but as far as I know, my sailor-friend did not follow through on this. Onlythose who follow through are the chosen ones, and Jesus said that such are few! J.A.W.
